Members of the junior and senior classes were inducted into the Frank Hardinn chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held on Sunday, April 19th.
The National Honor Society is designed to recognize students who excel not just in academics but also in service, leadership, and character. Students become eligible in the second semester of junior year if they have an accumulative GPA of 3.2 or better. These students must then complete an activity information form detailing their service and leadership activities. Finally, the faculty evaluates these students based on character.
The four ideals of the National Honor Society are scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Character is the force within each individual that distinguishes that person from others. Scholarship means a commitment to learning. A student willing to spend hours in reading and study will know the lasting benefits of a cultivated mind. Leadership should exert a wholesome influence on the school. By taking the initiative in class and school activities, the real leader strives to train and support others in attaining the same objective. Service can be described in various ways. In the routine of the day’s work, many opportunities arise to help others. Willingness to work for the benefit of those in need, without monetary compensation or without recognition, is the quality we seek in our membership.
Membership may help with college applications, but even students not considering college after high school should apply. Employers also recognize that NHS stands for more than just academics, so membership can help secure a job.
