The Unified Rockets basketball team placed third at the IHSA Special Olympics Unified State tournament in Champaign on Saturday, March 15th by defeating Triad High School from Troy.
Players Charlie Mathews and Cam Spirrison carried the Special Olympics torch and opened the games.
On Friday, the team lost a tough semi-final game to Bradley-Bourbonnais who went on to win the tournament.
The team is coached by Mrs. Stacey Seals. Coach Seals explained, “The experience has been nothing but inspiring.”
Seals is also proud of the team’s Regional championship. “My favorite memory is seeing the confidence they played with during Regionals. I was amazed at how well they worked together and the energy they brought. Seeing their smiles as they held the regional plaque was priceless,” said Seals.
Beyond the wins, coaching the team has been a learning experience for her as well. “I’ve learned so much from coaching this group,” she said. “It’s always a great day when you can uplift someone,” Seals continued. Coach Seals looks forward to spending more time with her players, watching them grow on and off the court.
