Freshman Savannah Meyers is a Hunter jumper. She competitively jumps horses. Competitions are held throughout Illinois, though mainly in the Chicago area. She competes with a horse named Faith.
The sport is officially called Hunter jumping. This is more formal than rodeo. It is more about the appearance of the horse and the rider as they go through a course of jumps. It is not a timed event.
“I started at a young age, and it’s better than just walking around,” Meyers said. “There’s a lady in our neighborhood that was doing lessons. I started when I was six doing lessons with her, and then I got a horse when I was 10,” continued Meyers.
Meyers and Faith train during the winter and compete in the summer.
In addition to competing, Meyers enjoys meeting new people and their support.
“I won an all-around championship, a few first places for jumping, some thirds, and second places,” stated Meyers. They have also won “Most Hardworking” and “Most Improved” honors.
Faith is a 12-year-old Welsh cross-breed. Meyers got her in 2020 and boards her in Metamora.
Meyers has officially competed for four years. She began jumping in t
he 18” class and has worked her way up. They currently compete in the 2’3” class.
Faith was injured during one of the jumps and Meyers is looking for a new horse.
