Limestone’s 2023-2024 Scholastic Bowl season has come to a close.
Scholastic Bowl is a competition that typically lasts from September-February/March. Each team has five players at a time. Players have to buzz in to answer the question before the other team. Questions are worth 10 points. Matches typically include 20 normal questions and 20 bonuses. Bonus questions are awarded to the team who correctly answers, although they can be stolen. Bonus questions are asked in three parts, which means there are 60 bonus questions. Limestone’s Scholastic Bowl teams have records of 3 wins, 12 losses for Varsity and 6 wins, and 9 losses for JV.
Ms. Emma Pfeiffer, JV scholastic bowl coach, began coaching because “I was on Scholastic Bowl in high school and I really like it. I did it for four years. Last year, Mr. (Rick) Hebron, who was the chemistry teacher, retired and they had the opportunity for me to become the JV coach so they asked me to help them out. I volunteered last year as a coach and this year I’m the official coach,” said Pfeiffer.
Mr. Adams began coaching because he had volunteered to moderate and decided to try coaching along with Hebron. He fell in love with the activity and the rest is history, as they say.
The captains of the two teams are sophomore Audra Lannert for JV and senior Anna Karmenzind for Varsity.
Pfeiffer stated that her favorite parts of the Scholastic Bowl season were not the matches but the practices because it allowed her to see the players grow and bond. There were many new friendships formed during the Scholastic Bowl season. Scholastic Bowl is a team activity, and just like any other one, it requires good chemistry between players to succeed.
As the season concluded, freshman Jackson Still was named to the JV Mid-Illini all-conference scholastic bowl team and Lannert was named to the Peoria Area League’s top JV team.
