Hocus Pocus 2
Twenty-nine years later, Disney decided to grant us the sequel to Hocus Pocus. In this movie, we follow three teenage girls who accidentally bring back the Sanderson Sisters and now must work together to take them down. Initially, I was opposed to the idea of a sequel to a story that had already tied up all of its loose ends. Though as the release date inched closer I could not help but become intrigued and after watching the movie I would say that I enjoyed it.
The thing with sequels is that they are usually just a poorly put-together cash grab of a movie and Hocus Pocus 2 is no exception. Hocus Pocus 2 essentially shares the exact same plot as the first one, with little to no changes. Someone unintentionally brings back the Sanderson Sisters by lighting the black candle and shenanigans ensue as the Sisters wreak havoc and the protagonist has to put a stop to them. It is also obvious that this movie was made just for nostalgia purposes seeing as there was no real reason for a sequel.
Even so, this does not mean that Hocus Pocus 2 was not enjoyable. I found it to be quite entertaining and funny actually. Something that I liked about this movie was that they decided to dive more in-depth into the Sanderson Sisters’ origins. The opening scene is of the Sanderson Sisters as little girls and we learn how they became witches. It also shows the relationship between the Sisters and their personified spellbook. Billy also has a predominant role as well. This not only adds depth to them but also makes them more likable as characters.Â
One thing about this movie that I did not find enjoyable was the twist at the end. Not only was the twist silly, but it stopped me from being fully immersed in the movie because of how cheesy it was. Overall, I would rate this movie a 3/5. If you are looking for a groundbreaking work of film then this is not for you. Though if you want a silly lighthearted movie that you can watch with the entire family for the spooky season, then this is just what you are looking for.
